Looking after it

Any small bird run collects nesting material quickly. Clear it out annually, because packed debris becomes exactly the flat surface the strip was fitted to remove.

Fairy-wrens are tiny protected natives, not a building pest. This page keeps the search, tells you what the strip is for, and points you at what you probably need.

Australia's wrens are the fairy-wrens, like the superb fairy-wren and the splendid fairy-wren. They are tiny native birds, they are protected, and they are not a building pest. Most people are glad to have them.

Native animals are protected under state and territory law in Australia, and that protection usually covers nests and eggs as well. Deterring an animal from a surface is fine. Harming it, trapping it or moving a nest that is in use is not, unless your state allows it under a permit.

The strip is 304 stainless steel pins on a clear polycarbonate base, 500 mm long, sold per 50 cm with no minimum order. Fit it with UV stabilised silicone, screws or cable ties.

If small birds are messing on your ledges, they are far more likely to be house sparrows, starlings or Indian mynas, which are introduced.

Measure the whole run, divide by 50 cm and round up. A bare half metre at the end of a ledge is exactly where the birds will go.

Anti-Wren Bird Spikes | Wren Deterrent Spike Strips | Wren Repellent Spikes (per 50cm strip)

We keep this page because people search for it, and we would rather give you a straight answer. A fairy-wren is too small for spikes to stop, and it is a protected native you should not be trying to move on. If small birds are causing trouble, work out which bird it is first. Our sparrow and myna pages cover the usual suspects.

Anti-Wren Bird Spikes | Wren Deterrent Spike Strips | Wren Repellent Spikes (per 50cm strip)

Timing is the part people get wrong. If there is an active nest on the surface, leave it until the young have gone, then clean the surface and fit the strip before the next season. Fitting early is lawful and easy. Moving a nest that is in use is the bit the law cares about.

Anti-Wren Bird Spikes | Wren Deterrent Spike Strips | Wren Repellent Spikes (per 50cm strip)

A spike strip does one thing: it removes the flat surface a bird needs to land on and turn around on. It is not a repellent, it makes no noise and there is nothing to top up.

Placement decides the result. Anything wider than about 150 mm takes two rows, and corners, the last half metre of a run and the gap behind a downpipe are the spots people leave open.

What it will not do: if there is food nearby, an open bin or standing water, the birds will stay in the area and use the next surface along. Spikes fix a surface, not a reason to be there.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. We give you 15 days from delivery on any unused item. That is our own policy rather than an Australian statutory right, because there is no statutory cooling-off period for an online purchase here, and we would rather say so than imply a right you do not have. Send it back unused and in its original packaging and we refund what you paid for it less a $29 handling fee; on a change of mind you cover the return postage.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Australian Consumer Law gives you a repair, a replacement or your money back, we pay the return postage, and nothing on this page limits that. Read the detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these spikes deter a fairy-wren?

No, and you should not want them to. A fairy-wren is small enough to sit between the pins, and it is a protected native that does no harm to a building.

Then why does this page exist?

Because people search for it. A straight answer is more useful than a dead link. The strip itself is our standard stainless product and it is the right buy for bigger birds.

What small bird do I probably have?

On a building, most likely a house sparrow, a starling or an Indian myna. All three are introduced. Our sparrow and myna pages go through what works on each.

How do I tell a fairy-wren from a sparrow?

A fairy-wren is tiny with a long tail held upright, and the males are bright blue in breeding season. A house sparrow is brown and grey, chunkier, with a short tail.

Is a noisy miner the same as an Indian myna?

No. The noisy miner is a native honeyeater, grey with a yellow patch behind the eye, and it is protected. The Indian myna is brown with a yellow eye patch and legs, and it is introduced.

What works on small introduced birds?

Close the gap if they nest in one, net the space if it is a space, and use spikes only on narrow ledges where the pins fill the width.

Will spikes work on small birds at all?

On a narrow surface where the 70 mm of pin coverage fills the width, yes. On a wide ledge a small bird will sit between the pins.

What counts as a narrow surface?

A slim sill, a pipe run, the top edge of a sign, a thin beam. Anywhere there is nowhere left to put a foot.

What if birds are getting into a gap?

Then no surface product helps. Close the gap once any nest is finished with, or net the area.

What if I am not sure whether the bird is native?

Assume it is and leave it. Waiting until a nest is finished with costs you a season and nothing else.

What else do you sell for small birds?

Bird netting in two sizes, and bird proof gel for narrow mouldings where a strip will not sit.

Are fairy-wrens protected in Australia?

Native animals are protected under state and territory law in Australia, and that protection usually covers nests and eggs as well. Deterring an animal from a surface is fine. Harming it, trapping it or moving a nest that is in use is not, unless your state allows it under a permit. Check with the wildlife agency in your state if you are unsure.

Can I move a nest?

Not while it is in use. Wait until the young have left, then clean the surface and fit the strip so the birds do not come back to it.

Do the spikes hurt birds?

No. The pins are blunt at the tip. A bird finds nowhere to stand and goes elsewhere.

When is the best time to fit them?

Before the breeding season starts, which for most Australian birds is late winter into spring. Fitting an empty surface early is the easy, lawful way to do it.

Are they safe around pets?

Yes. They are a discomfort rather than a hazard.

What is the strip made of?

304 stainless steel pins on a clear polycarbonate base.

How is it sold?

Per 50 cm strip with no minimum order.

How many strips per metre?

Two, and round up rather than leaving a bare end.

Can I cut them?

Yes, with a hacksaw through the polycarbonate base.

What fixing should I use?

UV stabilised silicone adhesive on a clean, dry surface, or screws where there is something to screw into.

Will they rust?

The pins are 304 stainless and will not.

Are they visible?

The base is clear and the pins are thin, so at height they are not obvious.

Do they need maintenance?

Clear debris from between the pins once a year, more often on a small bird run.

Do you install anything?

No, we supply only.

What are the dimensions?

Each strip is 500 mm long and 23 mm wide at the base, with 115 mm pins giving about 70 mm of protected width.

Are they visible from the ground?

The base is clear and the pins are thin, so at height they are hard to spot.

How much is delivery?

Free on orders over $75. Below that the only method offered is Express Delivery at $25, and there is no minimum order. Express is also available above $75 as a paid upgrade.

Can I return it if I ordered the wrong number of strips?

Yes. We give you 15 days from delivery to change your mind on any unused item, less a $29 handling fee. That is our own policy rather than an Australian statutory right, and it sits on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights, which are not affected.

Who do I ask if my question is not answered here?

Email theteam@birdspikes.net.au. Tell us the bird, the surface and roughly how long the run is, and we can usually answer in one reply.

Which small bird you actually have

The short version

Australia's wrens are the fairy-wrens: the superb fairy-wren, the splendid fairy-wren and their cousins. They are tiny native birds, protected under state and territory law, and they do not cause trouble on buildings. If something small is making a mess on your sill, it is almost certainly not a fairy-wren.

What it probably is

On a building, the usual small-bird culprits are the house sparrow, the common starling and the Indian myna. All three are introduced. Watch out for the noisy miner, which looks a bit like a myna but is a native honeyeater and is protected. Grey body, yellow patch behind the eye: leave it be.

If it is introduced

Close the cavity if they are nesting in one. Net the space if it is a space. Spike only the narrow surfaces where the pins fill the width, because a small bird will settle between the pins on a wide ledge rather than leave. Our sparrow page goes through it properly.

If it is native

Then it is not a pest problem, and the law treats it that way. Protection covers the bird, the nest and the eggs. The lawful route is to make a surface unattractive before it is in use, not to disturb anything already there.

About this page

We keep it because the search exists. The product on it is our standard stainless strip, and it is a genuinely good product for bigger birds. It is just not a wren product, and we would rather tell you that here than take the order.
